Backlinks get you found. What gets you cited?

A backlink helps search engines find your page. It does not make an AI answer cite it. Being linked, indexed, cited and recommended are four different outcomes. Check each one on its own.

The main points

Four outcomes, not one.

A backlink total cannot stand in for all four. Here is how to check each one.

Follow the link

Does it land on the answer?

Follow a link to your site from an article about your field. If it lands on a homepage instead of the evidence, that is a content gap to fix first.

Finds: the gap
Show the evidence

Give the reader something to inspect.

Say what was compared, where, when and how it was measured, and what limits the conclusion. Unproven claims stay labeled as unproven.

Earns: credibility
Check eligibility

Is the page indexed?

Google's AI features use pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet. Check the exact URL in Search Console. Eligibility is not selection.

Confirms: eligibility
Measure apart

Links and citations are separate records.

Track the referring page in one log and the AI answer and cited URL in another. A citation after a new link is a sequence, not proof of cause.

Start: one question, one page

Questions

Backlinks and AI citations, answered.

Do backlinks get you cited by AI?

Backlinks help search engines discover and assess your pages. Google's documentation does not establish that a backlink causes an AI answer to cite you.

What is the difference between a backlink and an AI citation?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. An AI citation is a source reference attached to an AI-generated answer.

Is buying links a shortcut?

Google's spam policy treats buying links to manipulate rankings as link spam. A proposal selling a quantity of links deserves scrutiny.

What do I check first?

One audience question and one linked page. Can a reader find the answer there, inspect its evidence and understand its limits?
